Judson Wade Bishop was born June 24, 1831, in Evansville, New York, the son of the Reverend John F. and Elena Brown Bishop. He had a brother, John F., and two sisters, Anna and Lena. Bishop was educated at Fredonia and Belleville academies and later took civil engineering training at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
